Are you a business owner or a service provider looking to promote your work on social media? It’s hard to know how to stand out from the crowd, but after listening to these four social media tips, you’ll have the right mindset to get started.
Successfully promoting your work or your business on social media isn’t just about what you post (although we have a whole blog post that can help you out with that). It’s not just about where you post (but we can aid you there too). You also have to consider the mindset you adopt when you log on.
Yes, social media can give a lot to you and your business, but only if you give back to your followers, in turn. It’s not a one-sided relationship, and if you view it as such, you’ll fall at the first hurdle.
In the four short videos below, WODIN CEO Julie Sylvia Kalungi lays out her best advice for the mindset you should adopt when promoting yourself or your business on social media. Follow these core tenants, and you can’t go wrong.
1. Social media is a conversation
Social media is a conversation as opposed to a sales pitch. If you approach social media by just logging on, posting, then logging off, without bothering with other people’s posts or their comments on your posts, then you’re ignoring the fact that social media users desire connection. Fulfil that desire by engaging in a back and forth.
2. Use social media as your ideas generator
There’s a lot that social media can give back to you, and it’s not just engagement and clicks. Social media is also a brilliant way to garner ideas and gather information about your audience. Analytics help you to understand which posts your followers are interested in and which they aren’t. Mapping trends helps you to work out how your audience’s minds work and what gets them to sit up and listen. Other people’s content may inspire your own. Make sure you’re paying attention.
3. Educate. Entertain. Empower.
The 3 Es: Educate. Entertain. Empower. As long as the content you post on social media is doing one, two, or all of those things, you can’t go wrong.
4. People want to socialise and connect
The first rule of social media is that EVERYTHING CHANGES. All the time. Especially when it comes to trends and news stories. What’s popular today may be forgotten tomorrow. But there’s one thing that never changes: people use social media because they want to socialise and connect.
People are driven to these platforms because they are curious about what’s going on in the world, what entertains them, and who the people are that exist within their (virtual or local) community. Jumping on trends is great, but don’t worry if that’s not your strong suit. As long as you feed your audience’s curiosity and their desire for connection, you will build a loyal following.
